SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL MINUTES
November 17, 2005
OPENING
The meeting was held in the principal’s conference room and
was called to order by Julie Busch at 3:05pm.
Present: Julie Busch,
Greg Burner, Lorena Kramer, Bob Pedersen, Kyle Bender, Marianna Tuchscherer, Chris
Prengaman, Susan Truax, Cheryle Ashley, Shannon
Wilkins, and Kathleen Edwards (PTA Liason)
The minutes from October
21, 2005 were reviewed and changes were made. A motion was made by Bob Pedersen to approve
the minutes as amended. The motion was
seconded by Shannon Wilkins and passed.
NEW BUSINESS
Discussed
local practices
Shannon Wilkins
led the discussion.
- Discussed
local practices: writing assessments by two teachers, writers workshop,
UCLA writers workshop
- Kyle
Bender discussed local math practices: standards based testing, Everyday
Math.
- Marianna
Tuchscherer discussed writing book-based stories that are used as
assessments, followed by tests. This is done to prepare the students for
SAT-9 and Star testing. Also discussed Reader’s Workshops used to develop
writing skills.
- ELD
– Houghton/Mifflin provides English as a second language materials
- Trimester
benchmarks for science are in development, but currently do not exist.
- Discussed
differences in Science test scores between Richmond
and Center Street.
Both schools use the same program, but deliver it differently. Richmond
has a Science Lab with one teacher delivering the program. Center Street
teachers each deliver the curriculum as part of their class. Julie brought
up the possibility of getting science based software in the Center Street
Technology Lab. Center Street
representatives will work with Richmond Street
in Feb. 2006 to discuss best practices from both schools.
PARENT SURVEY
- Parent
survey sub-committee to meet December
15, 2005 from 3-5pm.
- Discussion
was heard on the survey to determine if there were any new issues the
survey needed to address. Richmond Street
brought up the issue of “bullying”. They held an assembly to discuss this
issue with their students.
- Cafeteria
supervision was brought up as an area that needed to be addressed, along
with the lack of a Physical Education program.
- Availability
of School Site Council information was also discussed
- Discussed
getting more teacher response to the survey
- Discussed
incentives for completing the survey. “Thank you” note automatically sent
back to the respondent upon submission of the survey to the web site.
Discussed the possibility of a “get out of home work” pass emailed to the
respondent once the survey is submitted to the web site.

- The
meeting was adjourned by Julie Busch at 4:15
pm.
- The
next general meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 1/17/2006 at 3:00pm.
