The minutes of the September 27th meeting were distributed for review. Susan Fowler asked for a motion, Donna Horowitz made the motion, it was seconded by Elise Milette and approved by voice vote.Old Business — Budget Proposal
Marisa presented budget proposals for Art/Music/PE grant. This is a one time grant that Marisa suggested we use this year. The money cannot be spent on personnel or visiting programs. There were questions about who would benefit from the music requests, discussion about providing shade access for kids outside. Elise mentioned a business called Shades that might be helpful. Donna suggested that this year, students be given pedometers when their parents respond to the SSC survey.Marisa also shared the list of ideas for using the School and Library Block Grant as well. BrainPop is a technology resource that all classes could use. Kim added some information about the program as she has used it in the past. It's very user -friendly and covers all subject areas. Recommendation was made to provide amplification for upper grade classrooms and science lab. Elise felt that LCD players should be a priority, and Renee suggested wireless keyboards. The Kiwanis have supplied $20,500 for the science lab, but we may need more to get things up and running.
Center St. School received a $2,500 grant to start a garden which could be great for supporting science and nutrition programs on campus. The brain research speaker is a $2, 000 fee. Emily agreed that any speaker that would be heard by the entire staff would be a good use of funds; Elise suggested that perhaps a parent component might be added. There was discussion about the library as well.
Items that got the big nod seemed to be hardware for technology, BrainPop, and professional development. We need some more information on what exactly science lab needs, how many more LCD players we actually need and solid prices for some of these items. Marisa suggested a vote by email, and Susan reminded everyone that it is important to reply to all when voting.
New Business—
Susan asked that committees be formed to begin work on the SSC surveys which need to be ready for February. Emily, Susan, Donna and Elise agreed to be on the parent survey committee; Lynette and Kim will be on the staff survey committee.Marisa passed out student test data comparing results by grade level for 2006 and 2007. Some questions were asked.
Lupita shared information regarding CELDT testing. All students who have a language survey indicating a language other than English are tested. Older students also have reading and writing components to the test. There was discussion about how many kids are in the program, what the average level is and how the ELL students are supported on campus.
Susan called for the meeting to be adjourned; seconded by Donna. Our next meeting will be held on November 29th.
