School Site Parent Survey
There was good news! Due to the extended time and better advertising, more parents responded to the school survey-180 parents-up from last year’s number of 163. It is key to push this with teachers so they can encourage parents and making the pedometers really visible helped as well. Classified employees will take the survey this week and into next week. The teacher surveys will be available in the next few weeks. -
PE/Music Purchases
Superintendent has approved this budget, but would like to see money spent also for art. Marisa thinks it is possible to buy supplies with these funds. Susan offered to inventory the art supplies we now have on March 3rd. Emilee said she could help as well and maybe Lisa Parrish would have some ideas. Now, we are waiting for board approval on our purchases. -
ELAC Committee
Marisa will take this on as Lupita is stretched way too thin. She has invited parents to a meeting and will try to enlist some volunteers. Cheryl suggested telling classroom teachers who may be able to encourage parents to attend. -
New Business
The distinguished school visitation is scheduled for March 20th. There will be two people coming to make sure that our document reflects what really is happening here at Center St. School. Marisa is planning the day; we will have a welcome breakfast and a luncheon in the garden. There will be panels of parents, staff, and students. More information to come.As far as our school goals on academic equity and student achievement, we would like to keep some of our goals and change others. Last year, 19% of our fourth graders got a six on the writing test; we are hoping for 45% this year since we’ve had the UCLA writing support as well as the writing committee here on campus emphasizing writing instruction. Cheryl suggested encouraging more teachers to participate in the Writing Project as well.
We set a goal to have 65% of fifth graders pass the science test and surpassed this goal with 70%. It probably makes sense to change this goal as it’s been more than met.
There was discussion about financial literacy and 21st century goals. We’d like to keep our goals in the area of technology. Kudos to Elise who has really structured computer class and taught skill needed for our students.
Budget concerns were the final topic of the meeting. We will be losing two classes (due to enrollment). Dr. Yantz announced in the PTA meeting that the goal is to impact students as little as possible as we make cuts district-wide. There was some discussion. We looked at our school site monies and decided to retain all of the staff (reading specialist, computer aide…) for next year which will leave almost no cash for materials, but everyone felt that we were in a good position to do so since we spent a lot of money this year upgrading technology and purchasing supplies. Cheryl made a motion to approve the budget pending any future changes and Donna seconded. Voice approval was made.
