OATH OF OFFICE ADMINISTERED TO STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

 

Board President, Ms. Sherrill, welcomed Sarah Sharp, this year’s El Segundo High School Associated Student Body President and Student Representative to the Board of Education.  Ms. Sherrill administered the official Oath of Office to Miss Sharp.  Ms. Sherrill informed Sarah that her providing the students’ point of view to the Board of Education is important and her report is appreciated.

 

 

EL SEGUNDO  BUSINESS DONATES

 

Mr. Boyles presented a check in the amount of $458 to Ms. Sherrill for the El Segundo Unified School District.  Mr. Boyles reported that both of his sons have benefited from attending El Segundo schools.  He explained that upon opening his new company “1-800-Got Junk” in El Segundo, he pledged to commit a percentage of the revenues from May and June. The Board of Education thanked Mr. Boyles for his generous donation.

S&S  HARDWARE RECOGNIZED

 

It was with great pleasure that the Board of Education recognized S&S Hardware Company and thanked Mr. Swanson for his willingness to provide the labor to install the permanent locks on the El Segundo High School Phase II building classroom doors.  The Superintendent explained that without Mr. Swanson’s help, the district would have had to hire someone to perform this installation in order to provide our teachers with keys in time for the first day of school.  In appreciation, Mr. Swanson was presented with a commemorative construction project tee shirt.

 

BOND MEASURE E AUDIT REPORT

 

Ms. Jayne Pimlott, Chair of the Citizens’ Oversight Committee, reported to the Board of Education that the Committee has received and reviewed the financial and performance audit for the year ended June 30, 2004 for the Measure E bonds.  It was with pleasure that Ms. Pimlott reported that the Committee has accepted the report and have ascertained that the bond money has and is being spent on the project as specified. The audit report for the Measure E funds through June 30, 2004 will be reported to the Oversight Committee in November.

 

BOEING SPACE CAMP EARNS A+ FROM TEACHER PARTICIPANTS

 

Ms. Beachly and Ms. Dannen thanked the Board of Education and more specifically Boeing Satellite Systems for providing them with the very unique opportunity of attending Space Camp this summer.  Both teachers enthusi-astically expounded on the outstanding information and special instruction they had received as part of this event. The program culminating activity was the two shuttle mission events.  Both teachers planned to incorporate the lessons and information they had received immediately into their classroom.

 

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

 

Miss Sharp began her report by commenting on the newly finished classroom facilities.  She announced that students are enjoying attending classes in these state of the art classroom environments.  Fall sports are off to winning seasons and a pep rally is scheduled for Friday prior to the first home football game.  The ASB class anticipates a successful year since this year is the largest class ever with an enrollment of 50 students.  Miss Sharp discussed upcoming planned activities including the Friendly Feast and Homecoming events. She concluded her presentation by informing the Board that the ASB is working on proposed campus advertising policy for discussion and consideration.

 

NORTHROP GRUMMAN HIGH SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (HIP)

 

El Segundo High School 12th grade students have once again been invited to participate in the Northrop Grumman High School Involvement Program (HIP).  This program provides our students hands-on experience and the opportunity to receive training in their choice of more than 40 career offerings.  The HIP program is offered during the spring semester. The Board of Education was pleased to again approve this outstanding program.

 

ADOTPION OF NEW BOARD POLICY AND ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION FOR INDEPENDENT EDUCATIONAL EVALUATIONS

 

Dr. Yantz explained that this policy provides guidelines for parents seeking Indepen-dent Educational Evaluations for their children.   SELPA is encouraging districts to adopt this policy and our District is being proactive by enacting the recommended process.

 

UCLA WRITING PROJECT STAFF DEVELOPMENT

 

The Board of Education was pleased to approve the UCLA Writing Project staff development for teachers.  Under the direction of Jane Hancock, an internationally recognized leader in writing process instruction, our staff will be trained in the writing process by extensively trained teachers.  This training will bring extra-ordinary expertise to the district’s professional learning community and contribute significantly to the sustainability of the educational system as our teachers become the expert coaches. 

 

HIGH SCHOOL MODERNIZATION PROJECT

 

Our El Segundo High School students began the school year attending classes in the reconfigured technology building, the newly constructed science and performing arts buildings and the renovated south gym.

 

Change Order Requests as reviewed and recommended by C.W. Driver in the amount of $7,060 were approved bv  the Board for  High School Phase II modernization work.

 

PTA MEMBERSHIP ENCOURAGED

 

The Superintendent reminded everyone that September is PTA membership month. Every-one is encouraged to join PTA.  The El Segundo PTAs’ contribute countless volunteer hours and provide continued support.

 

WELCOME BACK

 

The Board of Education welcomed everyone back and extended their wishes for a great school year.  Back to School night events occur next week and dates and times are listed on the district calendar.
